Pahang’s season has gotten from bad to worse after ex-Johor Darul Ta’azim (JDT) coach Fandi Ahmad refused an offer to take over the team for the rest of the M-League season.
The Singaporean footballing legend revealed that was contacted by the Football Association of Pahang (PBNP), who wanted to offer him a contract to become The Elephants’ head coach.
“They did contact me and offered me a contract.
“However, I rejected the offer because I still have a contract here (Singapore national team assistant coach) until the end of December.
“I cannot tell you the details of the offer, but I can say that any form of discussion can be carried out after my contract ends,” the 53 year-old said as quoted by Utusan Malaysia.
The poor performance at the start of the season played a part in the resignation of Pahang FC CEO Fahrizal Hasan on Sunday, as well as head coach Ahmad Shaharuddin Rosdi and his assistant Azaruddin Aziz, who both resigned on Tuesday.
Apart from Fandi Ahmad, Pahang have been linked with ex-Kedah coach, Ramon Marcote.
WHAT DO WE THINK?
Fandi Ahmad is a household name in Asian football. He was ranked sixth in a list of Singapore’s 50 Greatest Athletes of the Century, which was released by The Straits Times. He played about 450 times in his career and scored more than 200 goals in the process. He has also won titles as player and as a coach. Fandi Ahmad rejected Pahang because he still has a contract with Singapore. However, he said he will be open to discussions at the end of the year, when his contract comes to an end. Will Pahang be the only club interested in the services of the Singapore national team assistant coach? Look at Sarawak under Datuk K. Rajagopal and Kelantan under K. Devan. Both this coaches were appointed to produce results and they have not been doing so this current season. No one will be able to predict how the season will end and which manager stays or get ‘rested’ but one thing is for sure, all the Super League (MSL) clubs will be interested in Fandi Ahmad if they need a replacement.
