Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have confirmed today that they have sent a letter to FIFA to nominate Faiz Subri’s wonder goal for the 2016 Puskas Award.
In that letter, FAM proposed to FIFA that the 35-yard free kick scored by the 29 year-old on the 62nd minute during Pulau Pinang’s 4-1 victory over Pahang in the Super League match last Tuesday should be listed as one of the candidates for the best goal of the year.
They also attached a video of his goal as a supporting document.
According to Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who suggested to nominate the Pulau Pinang forward’s goal, FAM have the responsibility of nominating Faiz Subri as a contender because they are the national footballing body.
“I understand that FAM will nominate ‘that’ goal to FIFA for evaluation because the nomination for best goal must be done through the football association of a country,” he said yesterday, according to Harian Metro.
The goal instantly became viral on social media and received praise from fans all around the world.
The FIFA Puskas Award was introduced in 2009, with ex-Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo winning it for his 40-yard belter against Porto in the Champions League quarter-final.
