Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) are determined to open their AFC Cup campaign with a win, as they prepare to face Myanmar side Ayeyawady United at the Larkin Stadium on Wednesday.
JDT skipper Safiq Rahim has however urges his teammates to not underestimate their opponents, despite being touted as favourites to win the game, by virtue of being the reigning AFC Cup champions.
“Though we did thrash them 5-0 in the knockout stages of the AFC Cup last season, we can underestimate them this time. What happened last year is history. We’ve got to remain focused,” he told Berita Harian.
“Besides, I am sure they will be interested to bounce back and prove a point. It’ll be an interesting game for us.
“As of now, our team morale is at its peak and it has to stay that way in order to ensure that our momentum isn’t disrupted,” he added.
JDT will head into the match on the back of back-to-back victories against Terengganu FC II in the Super League as well as UiTM FC in the second round of the FA Cup.
