Penang State Government has awarded an incentive of RM10,000 to internet star Faiz Subri, after he scored an outstanding free-kick that went viral last Tuesday.
The contribution was handed to Subri at Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s office earlier today, as a sign of appreciation for the way in which the goal has brought worldwide attention to Penang.
“The reward is for bringing worldwide recognition and glory to Penang and Malaysia,” he told reporters.
“This is the first time a Malaysian footballer has received global fame for the right reasons.”
Within hours of scoring the goal, clips of it went viral all over the internet, attracting the attention of internationally-acclaimed media organizations like CNN and even ESPN.
Penang FA organized a special press conference yesterday, in which they announced that the jersey he wore during the game would be auctioned off.
Faiz also went on to say that his goal was no fluke, before Penang FA Assistant Manager Nazim Ariff confirmed it; revealing that Faiz spends 15 minutes on free-kick practice every day.
