The Russian Tennis Federation president Shamil Tarpishev has been handed a hefty fine as well as a one year suspension from the women’s tour after he recently referred to Serena and Venus Williams as the ‘Williams Brothers’.
Shamil was caught making the remark during a television show last weekend, and the Woman’s Tennis Association has responded by suspending him for a year, as well as giving him a fine worth $25,000.
The WTA Chief Executive, Stacy Allaster said that Shamil’s act deserves wide condemnation, and that is shouldn’t have a place in any sport for that matter.
“Mr. Tarpischev’s statements questioning their genders tarnish our great game and two of our champions. His derogatory remarks deserve to be condemned and he will be sanctioned.
“As a result of his comments I have ordered Mr. Tarpischev to be fined $25,000, the maximum allowed under WTA rules.”
