Muay Thai has yet to make a big impression in the local sports industry and Terengganu is about to make a change and hold as much as eight Muay Thai championships in order to exploit raw talent that would be able to represent the state and compete on national and international levels.
Manager of the Terengganu Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) Muay Thai, Hasyim Ramli claimed that the lack of athletes in the sport has inspired him to co-operate with the Terengganu Muay Thai Gym (TMT) to organize championships in every district of the state this year.
“Our wish is to be able to find talented athletes and mould them so that they can compete on international levels,” said Hasyim as quoted from Harian Metro.
“The athletes we have now are talented and there is a lot of them but they’re all catching up with age and we need to react early to find replacements.”
“The participation of female athletes is still lacking and in order to instill some interest in them, we plan to start it at the schooling level.”
The state also aims to not use athletes from other states to represent Terengganu in the SUKMA or any other competitions.
