Fernando Alonso will be leaving Ferrari at the end of the year.
In an interview with Italian television channel, RAI, the team’s recently departed President, Luca Di Montezemolo claimed Alonso is leaving for two main reasons, namely for a new change of environment, and to win another title again.
The Spanish driver, who is in his fifth season with Ferrari, has been openly unhappy about their partnership. Despite his three-time runner-up finish at the World Championship, many have perceived it as a star driver carrying a mediocre car to victory, and its not the success he would have been craving.
Di Montezemolo also admitted, that the team’s stroke of bad luck- having not won a constructors title since 2008, while neither Alonso nor Kimi Raikkonen have topped the podium this season- were also key factors in the 33 year old’s decision to leave the team.
Alonso’s impending departure leaves the door wide open for four-time and reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel to join the Italian outfit. Vettel made a shock announcement on his decision to quit Red Bull Racing earlier this month, a team in which the German had achieved 37 out of his 38 victories.
Meanwhile, reports have linked Alonso to a likely move back to McLaren, despite his turbulent single season there in 2007.
Alonso is currently sixth in the standings, with just two podium appearances after finishing third in China and runner-up in Hungary back in April.
