Sarawak is determined to become the champion of the 18th Malaysia Games (SUKMA) which will be held in Kuching from July 22 to 31 next year.
Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan stated that Sarawak would try their best to be an excellent host and claims that two committees had already been set up for the Games, both being the main committee and the organizing committee.
“Currently the training of athletes is being intensified at various centres across the state. About 850 elite athletes are presently undergoing sessions under the charge of 90 coaches. Some of them (athletes) are receiving exposures through competitions in national and international tournaments,” he said as quoted for The Borneo Post.
“The ministry will also recruit additional coaches, local and foreign, to boost the performance of our athletes.”
“The Games technical officials and volunteers are also undergoing training. Of the (technical) officials, at least 80 per cent are Sarawakians,” Mawan added.
Sarawak had previously won the SUKMA three times, the first being in 1990, then 1992 and 1994.
