Safiq Rahim signs new four-year deal with Johor DT

Malaysian skipper Safiq Rahim has officially signed a new four-year contract with reigning MSL as well as AFC Cup champions, Johor Darul Ta’azim.

The 28 year-old signed the deal earlier today and will remain with the Southern Tigers until 2019, at the very least.

Safiq has been in scintillating form over the last two years – establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in Southeast Asia.

He was the top scorer of last year’s AFF Suzuki Cup, before going on to play a crucial role in JDT’s MSL title triumph – notching seven goals as well as an assist in the process.

Safiq was also voted as the Most Valuable Player of the AFC Cup final, as he led the Southern Tigers to an unprecedented win over Istiklol FC in Tajikistan.

WHAT DO WE THINK?

It’s a no brainer, really. Safiq has been one of their most consistent performers this year and was largely influential within the team as well. This is the best way to honour his contributions and the four-year contract is certainly a statement of intent. Why? Malaysian teams rarely tie players down to long-term contracts, because of how volatile things can get. But if JDT are willing to do so, then it signals their long-term commitment towards expanding the Southern Tigers’ empire.
