There is a tinge of suspense about tomorrow’s Malaysia Cup final, and it has a lot to do with Selangor’s ‘Mission 33’.
The Red Giants have won 32 Malaysia Cup titles in their history – which effectively makes them the most successful football team in the country’s history. But the last of those titles came 10 years ago in 2005 and since then, they’ve been hunting for their 33rd triumph.
They did come close in 2008, before losing to Kedah in the final but Selangor striker Afiq Azmi believes that it’s time for them to complete a mission that’s long overdue.
“The most important thing is for us to conclude the ‘Mission 33’. That’s the challenge for every Selangor player. We have to actualize the dreams of Selangor fans,” he told Harian Metro.
Mehmet Durakovic admitted that he hasn’t got his starting eleven for the final clash figured out yet, but Afiq is visibly hoping to feature from kick-off.
“Yes, I’ve definitely thought about it and I’d like to play from the beginning of the match. But I also know that the head coach will have his own ideas and strategies for the game.
“So it doesn’t really matter if I start, because even before this, I have been preserved for the second half, where I can have a bigger impact,” he added.
