Fernando Alonso has played down chances of not having a drive in the 2015 Formula 1 season in light of his imminent departure from Ferrari at the end of this year, according to a report by Autosport.
The Spaniard has made his desire to join Mercedes clear but they have ruled him out as an option until 2016 by the earliest, contingent upon Lewis Hamilton’s choice to stay or leave, it has been reported.
The two time world champion is leaving Ferrari due to a break down in relations, after rumours had surfaced last month suggesting that rival Sebastian Vettel was prepared to swap Red Bull with Alonso for the famous Scuderia red.
Despite not taking kindly to these rumours, Alonso remained calm when discussing his plans for 2015 in an interview with Autosport.
“I will do the best for my future, the best for the future of Ferrari as well, because that has been my priority for several years” Alonso had made clear in the interview.
“So my decision inside and outside the track was to help this fantastic team, and I am still happy with the things we have” he went on to add.
Alonso has three more Grands Prix to drive in for Ferrari prior to deciding on his future: the United States Grand Prix, Brazilian Grand Prix, and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
