Sepang International Circuit’s (SIC) management has confirmed that this weekend’s Malaysian MotoGP race will go on as scheduled, despite hazy conditions within Klang Valley.
The Air Pollutant Index (API) currently shows that most areas in Klang Valley has surpassed the 100 mark which means makes it extremely unhealthy.
However, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SIC, Datuk Razlan Razali said Dorna Sports, the MotoGP commercial rights holder, wants the race to go on as they don’t believe the haze situation in Sepang is dangerous yet.
“I had a discussion with Dorna this morning and we have decided to go ahead with the race this weekend. The haze in Sepang is not too serious, compared to other places.
“The event needs to go on because it involves points to decide the overall champion and Sepang will be hosting the penultimate race of the season.
“They (MotoGP) have experience in organising races under such conditions in other countries. We also have contingency plans in place like omitting the warm up sessions or reducing the duration of the race,” he told Bernama, yesterday.
The Malaysian Grand Prix will decide the winner of this year’s MotoGP title; with Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo both ready to battle it out.
Four Malaysian riders will be in action as well this weekend, with Hafizh Syahrin, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman, Mohd Ramdan Mohd Rosli competing in Moto2 while Zulfahmi Khairuddin will be competing in Moto3.
