Formula One drivers support speed-limit proposals

Formula One drivers have shown their support to have a “virtual safety car” that would force the entire track to slow down, when yellow warning flags are waved.

The “virtual safety car” would allow drivers to respond to automatic GPS controls as if a safety car was deployed, but without it appearing it on the track. Some indoor go-kart circuits already use a similar system, that cuts speeds at the push of a command from a main control center.

This, after race director Charlie Whiting called for the need to have automatic speed limiters at the Russian Grand Prix as one of the added safety measures, following Jules Bianchi’s shocking crash in Japan last weekend.

The French driver, who is still in “critical but stable” condition, suffered severe brain injuries after veering off a wet track while yellow warning flags were being waved and hitting a recovery tractor that was removing the crashed Sauber car.

Whiting meanwhile, also stressed that their main aim was to ensure that any changes were feasible, and able to be in place by the start of the 2015 season.
