National men singles coach Hendrawan is all bent on making sure that country’s badminton hero Lee Chong Wei defeats current world champion Chen Long of China, especially in upcoming competitions.
Based on the draw, Chong Wei is scheduled to face Chen Long in the quarter finals of Denmark Open (13-18 October) and in the semi-finals of French Open (20-25 October).
Hendrawan, who became the world champion in 2001, only had one advice for Chong Wei if he meets his China rival – patience.
“Facing Chen Long is a whole different thing compared to other opponents. Chong Wei needs to give it all he has got, but most importantly being patient in order to defeat him.”
“I realize Chong Wei has reduced his rally game nowadays, preferring a more fast attacking style of play.”
“With Chen Long, he has to control the speed and be patient,” said the Indonesian, as quoted by Harian Metro.
The last meeting between these two was in the Jakarta World Championships earlier this year, where Chen Long prevailed.
Hendrawan also added that the concentration should not just be on Chen Long, as other shuttlers are capable of springing a surprise as well.
“In Denmark, Chong Wei will be facing P Kashyap of India in the first round, and Hu Yun of Hong Kong in the next.”
“I do want him to focus in each game without thinking too much on facing Chen Long. When the time comes, we will be prepared.”
WHAT DO WE THINK?
Hendrawan’s observation is showing that LCW is rushing things when he faces Chen Long. He wants to end the game fast, giving his opponent no chance of crawling back. Chong Wei’s age plays a huge role here. During his younger days, Chong Wei is able to hold the play, control, and play rallies to tire down the opponents. But the LCW we know now has to be smart if he wants to defeat Chen Long, who is not the world number one for no reason.
