Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) President Huang Ying How has promised national squash player Nafiizwan that his intentions of being based in Europe for training purposes, will be given due attention.
The Terengganu-born player recently expressed his dismay at National Sports Council’s refusal to fund him, if he’s based abroad. While Huang did concede that he understands Nafiizwan’s frustrations, he was also quick to point out that there are plenty of details to be ironed out, before such funds are approved.
“We (SRAM) just had a meeting with the NSC, but the funds have not been approved yet,” he told Harian Metro.
“There’s a lot of factors that needs to be taken into consideration, when it comes to allocating funds. We did touch on those things, and now we’re merely waiting for what NSC have to say.
“Training overseas will consume a lot of funds, so proper planning and analysis needs to be done, before any decision is made. So Nafiizwan needs to be patient. SRAM will be backing him up, and we merely need to iron out the details for the time being,” he added.
WHAT DO WE THINK?
That’s a fair response, really. Considering that he’s by far, Malaysia’s best male squash player at this point, an overseas training stint could precisely be what he needs. But having said that, funds can’t just be allocated easily, especially since Nafiizwan’s achievements aren’t stellar just yet. Nicol David, is a whole different situation, altogether. Investing in her will most likely produce a return of investment. But when it comes to Nafiizwan, it’s still a risk, and he needs to understand that.
