Most Malaysian fans vividly remember the day in which we clinched the Suzuki Cup back in 2010. It was a turning point for Malaysian football, like it or not. Attendances increased, the attention grew, and money was flowing into every football infrastructure within the country as well. Fast forward five years later, nothing much has changed, has it?
But it wouldn’t be entirely unfair to suggest that a brand new head coach could provide a temporary respite, while the bigger problems are dealt with. The race for the Malaysian hotseat is already picking up as well, with several individuals publicly announcing their desire to help revitalize Malaysia’s fortunes on the international stage.
Datuk Ong Kim Swee, who is the current interim head coach, has hinted that he would love to keep the job permanently. Bojan Hodak, who previously led JDT and Kelantan to the Super League title, has also expressed his willingness. You also have George Boateng, the ex-Middlesbrough and Netherlands international, suggesting that his modern football methods are precisely what’s needed to strengthen the national team.
But while FAM will have to scrutinize every application thoroughly, we’d also like to hear from you. Who do you think should become the next Malaysian national team head coach? Should Ong Kim Swee be trusted with role? Or should FAM take a gamble with George Boateng? Perhaps, the experienced Robert Alberts would do? Or would you prefer someone else, who isn’t on the list?
