Novak Djokovic claimed the second US Open title of his career after overcoming a resistant Roger Federer in the final, which took place earlier today in New York.
The world number one triumphed 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-4 over his Swiss opponent, making it his first title since 2011 on the Flushing Meadows hard court.
Djokovic now has played in every major final this season, winning three of them, with his only loss coming in the French Open to Federer’s fellow countrymen, Stan Wawrinka.
“I have to share my admiration for Roger, everything he’s still doing for tennis. Coming on court knowing you are playing against probably the best player in the game adds a little bit more pressure.”
“It has been an incredible evening for me. I’m enjoying this year more than previous years because I’m a husband and father. Makes it even sweeter,” said Djokovic, as quoted by The Guardian.
Federer also expressed his satisfaction of reaching the final despite the loss, stating the passion for the sport will always burn inside him.
“Felt great to be back in a (US) final after six years. Congratulations Novak, another great win,” said the Swiss.
“I’ve had a wonderful two weeks, enjoyed my tennis throughout and thought it was a great match. I think we walk away from it knowing more about our games and more about ourselves. One thing is certain; I’ll see you guys next year.”
Federer’s loss means that they now stand at 21 wins apiece in a rivalry stretching back eight years, with 34 year-old suffering back-to-back final defeats, after losing in the Wimbledon title to Novak as well.
