As expected, national badminton superstar Lee Chong Wei had no trouble in getting through the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw of 2015 Japan Open Series after winning two of his matches yesterday.
Chong Wei, who is aiming to improve his world ranking, cruised past Scotland’s Alistair Casey 21-3, 21-3 and then defeated Kwang Hee Heo from South Korea 21-10, 21-12 later to book his spot among the seeded players.
He will now face Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana in the first round, and possible further meetings against nemesis Lin Dan and Chen Long of China.
Nevertheless, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost Hansen praised the 32 year-old’s performance despite realizing his path will be full of tough challenges.
“He played well, a solid performance. What’s important is he did not waste his energy. I’m confident that he will perform well against Boonsak,” he told Arena Metro.
Lee Chong Wei currently occupy the 28th spot in the world rankings.
