Stephen Van Huizen’s excellent record has been the main reason of his re-appointment as the head coach of national senior hockey squad, said Datuk Ow Soon Kooi.
The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) Coaching Committee chairman stated that Stephen is among one of the best coaches in the country and has guided Malaysia into few successful competitions.
“If we take a look back during the year 2000, Van Huizen was the only coach to steer Malaysia into the final rounds of Sydney Olympics, besides winning the silver medal in the 2010 Asia Sports in China.”
“He has been given a 2 year contract and the main focus now is the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.”
“If he gets the team through, we may extend his contract for an additional two years, keeping the preparations for 2020 Tokyo Olympics in mind,” he told Harian Metro.
Van Huizen will officially take charge of the Malaysian men’s team starting October 1st.
Soon Kooi also announced the selection of Lim Chiow Chuan as the assistant coach, while former coach Tai Beng Hai has been given responsibility of being director of the Hockey Development Program.
