Malaysian driver Alex Yoong moved to the top of the Audi R8 LMS Cup drivers’ chart after sealing a home win in Round 8 of the competition at the Sepang International Circuit this morning.
The reigning champion was in good spirits, with a considerable amount of home fans backing him up. And despite starting third on the grid, a mistake from Hong Kong’s Marchy Lee allowed Alex to swoop into top spot within the first lap, and he controlled the race from that moment.
Marchy did mount a late comeback, but Alex held on to secure the win, with Switzerland’s Rahel Frey claiming third on the day.
“I’m certainly happy to win here, since it’s a home race for me. There was a nice bit of pressure this morning, with fans and family coming out to support me,” he said after the race.
“We analysed some data from the previous race and made changes to the car, and that helped a lot this morning,” he added.
Unfortunately for Alex, his victory meant that he started Round 9, which was held in the afternoon, with additional amounts of weights on his car, to balance the field.
That certainly took it’s toll as he dropped from first, to fourth on the grid at the finish line, with Marchy Lee claiming the win, ahead of Franky Chen and Rahel Frey respectively.
However, Alex’s results in both races means that he is now on top of the scoring chart with 101 points, ahead of Franky Chen, who is on 97.
