Despite winning Malaysia Super League title for two years in a row, Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) are refusing to set high expectations for the Malaysia Cup.
JDT President, Datuk Ismail Karim believes the Malaysia Cup drops outside their zone of priority, with the FA Cup and Super League being far more important in their eyes.
“Malaysia Cup is a prestigious tournament but it is not a priority as we want to focus on the FA Cup and the Super League.
“Since JDT’s revolution in 2013, our objective has always been to qualify for the AFC Cup and now we have reached the target.
“But since Malaysia Cup is the oldest cup competition in the country, we will do our best to and compete professionally,” he added.
Head coach of JDT, Mario Gomez shared the president’s view, saying that they will try to win every match, though there is not expectation on them to do so.
“We will work hard and try to take one match at a time but we will not be disappointed if we don’t win it.
JDT reached the Malaysia Cup final for the first time last year, though they lost to Pahang on penalties.
This time around, they will compete in Group B, alongside Perak, ATM and Sarawak.
