The pressure of wearing the number 7 shirt can sometimes be inevitable.
Especially if it’s a club like Manchester United, where the number 7 shirt is treated in a sacred way, due to its history. The likes of George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and more recently Cristiano Ronaldo, have done wonders in that shirt. But they’ve not quite had a prolific number 7, since Ronaldo departed. Owen barely had an impact, Valencia struggled and even Di Maria could not live up to its expectations.
But when Memphis Depay was handed the shirt, there was a buzz of excitement about it. The shirt was being handed to an individual who is rich in confidence – something a player would need to withstand the pressure that comes along with that shirt.
Last night though, Memphis showed why he deserved the shirt. The Dutch wizard was arguably the best player on the pitch, as Man United claimed a 3-1 win over Club Brugge. Memphis scored the first and second goal, before providing the assist for Marouane Fellaini’s strike at the death.
Absolutely brilliant!
