World Championships: Jing Yi remains composed ahead of Carolina battle

Going up against the women’s world no.1 badminton player is quite an uphill task, but Tee Jing Yi seems to be unfazed about it.

The national women’s singles player will face reigning champion Carolina Marin of Spain in the second round at the World Badminton Championships in Jakarta later today, and she remains confident of her chances.

“I will be the underdog and there is no pressure on me. It is different for Carolina as she is the defending champion,” said Jing Yi, as quoted by New Strait Times.

The two shuttlers took on each other in the World Championships last year, with the victory going on Carolina’s side, but this time Jing Yi’s chances were boosted by the news of Carolina’s slow recovery after an injury.

“The world meet is her first tournament after an injury and her condition may not be so good. However, I just want to focus on my game,” admitted Jing Yi.

Jing Yi may not be the favorite but after her 21-13, 21-8 win over Italian Jeanine Cicognini in her first round match and the odds looking good on her side, the Malaysian is surely all pumped up.
