The Kuala Lumpur Cycling Open Championship is the perfect stage for national cyclist, Azizulhasni Awang to collect points needed for him to qualify for Rio Olympics in Brazil, next year.
President of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (PKBM), Datuk Abu Samah Abd Wahab said the championship is important for Azizulhasni, better known is “The Pocket Rocket Man”, to further consolidate his position in the sprint event.
He added that Azizulhasni is now ranked 34th with 301 points in the International Cycling Union (UCI), and need to at least be at the 32nd spot in the world to qualify for Rio.
“Azizulhasni still need points in the sprint event. If he does well in the Kuala Lumpur Open, he will be able to take part in the Italy World Championships.”
“And if he does win again, the points will increase and mathematically he will be worthy of the Rio Olympics spot,” the PKBM president told Berita Harian.
The Kuala Lumpur Open, scheduled from 18 to 22 August in Cheras, will see the limit of participation by dominant countries in the cycling event, in order to give way to local cyclists to gain points.
“This competition will be beneficiary to our national cyclists. If we invite stronger teams from other countries, our own cyclists will not be able to obtain points needed.”
