Great Britain’s wait to appear in the semi-final of the Davis Cup was finally over as Andy Murray’s victory over France’s Gilles Simon sent Great Britain into the semi-final of the Davis Cup in 34 years.
Murray, played his third consecutive match in the space of three days after his victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as well as teaming up with his brother Jamie in the doubles, overcame fatigue to beat the Frenchman 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, 6-0 in 3 hours and 26 minutes.
“The whole weekend has been fantastic,” A delighted and teary Murray said after ensuring Britain’s passage into the semi by giving them a 3-1 lead, as quoted by Foxsportsasia.
“This team has done amazing things. We’re punching above our weight here. We’re in the semi-finals now of the biggest competition in tennis.
“It’s been a long road back from where we were a few years ago but there are many players who have played their part in getting us here.
“I’m just proud to get here and hopefully we can do well against Australia in September.”
Tiredness appeared to have been too much for Murray as Simon took full advantage of Murray’s situation but Murray came roaring back and capitalized on Simon’s minor injury as he fell on the ground twice and Murray ultimately was too strong for Simon.
“It feels unbelievable to get through that,” Murray said.
“It wasn’t looking good in the second set but I managed to find a way and used up every last ounce of energy.
“I tried to change my tactics, I was making too many mistakes and Gilles was playing so solid.
“I just chased every ball down, I didn’t care how I played, I just wanted to win the match today and that’s what I did.”
Britain will now play Australia in the semi-final, and will hope to take Great Britain into the final in 37 years as well as going one step further in ending Great Britain’s wait for winning the Davis Cup since 1936.
