Malaysian world no.1 badminton player Lee Chong Wei began his Taiwan Open journey with a win over Kim Dong Hoon of South Korea, in Taipei Arena, today.
The unseeded Chong Wei took only 28 minutes to win 21-10 and 21-7, and tipped to face Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto after he defeated Angus Ng of Hong Kong 21-8, 21-16.
Another Malaysian representative in the men singles is Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, who also marched on after a three-set win over Sho Sasaki of Japan.
In over an hour and eight minutes, Zulkarnain overcame a stubborn Sasaki with a hard-fought 21-15, 17-21 and 21-16 victory.
He will now face China’s Wang Zhengming in the second round.
In contrast to that, Goh Soon Huat was eliminated after a hard-fought match ended in favour of top seed, Chen Long of China.
The Malaysian shuttler was unlucky to be drawn against Chen Long in the first round, but maintained a tough encounter before eventually going down 23-21, 21-11 in 53 minutes.
