Taiwan Open: Malaysian shuttlers aim for retribution

After a demoralising performance in the recent Singapore SEA Games, doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong has shifted their attention onto the Taiwan Open, which begins tomorrow.

V Shem admitted that they were gutted of not being able to contribute at least a medal in Singapore, yet diminish all bad thoughts to focus in Taiwan.

He went on to add that this time’s Taiwan Open would be the same level as a Super Series tournament, as many shuttlers participate with one intention – gain points to qualify for Rio Olympics 2016.

“We will make a few changes to our game play this time. Looking at all the main participants from all around the world, we don’t have high hopes, but the important thing is to focus on each game, maybe spring a surprise along the way,” V Shem told My Metro.

The Taiwan Open will also include fallen singles shuttler, Liew Daren, who’s hoping it would be a platform for him to rejuvenate his career.

Daren has been on the sidelines due to his lengthy health problems, and his comeback draws him against few of the top players in the world.

“I realize the Taiwan Open is not an easy place to play. I have been absent for a while now, and hopefully I’ll adapt fast to the pace and pressure of the game.”

The world no. 66 is raring to go after recovering from his ill-fated dengue fever and will be facing Dionysius Hayom Rumbakais of Indonesia in the first round.
