Serena Williams has just completed her second ‘Serena Slam’ – winning four straight Grand Slams – in her career by defeating Garbine Muguruza 6-4, 6-4 at the Wimbledon Final, her 21st Grand Slam overall in a truly remarkable career.
On paper, the scoreline suggests a straightforward win but in truth, it was a hard-fought battle as Muguruza gave Serena a run for the money as she fully deserves praise for coming back from 5-1 down at one point in the second set after a tense and closely contested first set.
Following her victory, the world no 1 will look forward to be the first woman tennis player – and only the fourth woman player in tennis history – to complete the ‘Calendar Grand Slam’ – four majors in a calendar year – since Steffi Graf last achieved this feat in 1988, at the US open next month. If she does succeed, she will also equal Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slams.
Her incredible feat surprises even herself, as she admitted that she never would’ve have expected to win four majors in a row since last year’s US Open.
“I honestly wouldn’t have thought last year after winning the US Open I would win the Serena Slam at all,” she said, as quoted by Foxsportsasia. “It’s super exciting.
“I just knew I wanted to win Wimbledon this year. Of all the grand slams, it was the one I hadn’t won in a while.”
