National badminton player Lee Chong Wei will able to compete in the Taiwan Open without any regrets.
Initially, Chong Wei was hesitant to participate in the tournament due to his wife – former shuttler Wong Mew Choo – being pregnant with their second child.
But now she has decided to give birth through caesarean on July 11, a day before Lee was scheduled to depart for the Taiwan Open in Taipei from July 14-19.
This arrangement will allow the couple to be together during the delivery, preventing him from skipping the event.
“Baby’s estimated due date was originally set between July 15 and 17. I’m grateful to Mew Choo, who understands the importance of me competing in Taiwan. Therefore, she has decided to undergo a C-section this Saturday.”
“Now I can refocus on heading into the matches and hopefully secure more vital points for Olympic qualifications,” said Chong Wei as stated in badmintonplanet.com.
He also highlighted the sacrifice made by Mew Choo, which is crucial for his journey to play in four consecutive Olympics.
While the Malaysian team leave to Taipei on Sunday morning, Chong Wei has, however, postponed his flight so he could spend more time with his family.
The two-time Olympic silver medallist will play South Korea’s Kim Dong-hoon in the first round, with a high chance of a second-round clash with 10th seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia.
If everything goes well, he could set up an epic quarter-final match against No.1 seed Chen Long of China.
