LeBron James will be choosing not to take in a $21.6 million option in his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers and opts to become a free agent instead starting July 1.
This marks the third time within the past six years that James will be an unrestricted free agent. However, the forward has stated his intentions on rejoining his current team.
James’ decision was expected by most peoplefor months. This allows him to sign a new maximum contract, which is likely to be another two-year deal with a player option for 2017-18.
That will pay him more than he would have made under his previous contract and is expected exceed $22 million.
Last week, general manager of Cleveland Cavaliers, David Griffin announced that the team had been in regular contact with James since the NBA Finals ended. He also claimed that James was intrigued over the discussions about the roster.
“We’ve heard from him every day pretty much relative to our roster,” Griffin said.
“It’s been great. He’s been very much engaged with us on a lot of different levels, so it’s been positive.”
The 30 year-old has averaged 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds, 8.8 assists and approximately 46 minutes in the previous series.
