After going almost five years without a grass court title, Rafael Nadal made his comeback through the Stuttgart Open final.
Nadal, who won his previous grass court title in the 2010 Wimbledon, took on eight seeded Serban, Viktor Troicki in the Stuttgart Open final and defeated him calmly with a score of 7-6 and 6-3.
Despite the victory, the match was rather intense as Nadal failed to earn a single breakpoint in the first set. The Spaniard then bounced back to drop three points in the tie-break dominated the match.
This is Nadal’s second title of the year since the Argentina Open in March and 66th career title.
“Since 2011, I didn’t play a final on grass, so finally to win a title again after five years on grass is very good news for my game, for my mentality and at the same time is another title,” said tenth seeded Nadal after the match.
“At this point of the season for me, every victory is important, every title means a lot to me. This is not confidence for Wimbledon, this is an important victory for me and I’m happy for that today.”
Since the Stuttgart Open is also known as the Mercedes Cup, Nadal received a new yellow Mercedes sports car alongside 104,000 Euros.
