SEA Games: Malaysia dominates squash event

The Malaysian squash team bagged two gold medals in both the events competed yesterday at the Kallang Squash Centre yesterday.

The first day proved dominance from the nation when they so rightly secured a one two in both the men’s and women’s event.

Ranked no.66 worldwide, Rachel Arnold delivered a gold medal by defeating compatriot Vanessa Raj Gnanasigamani in four sets 11-13, 11-9, 11-3, 11-5. Philippines’ Jemyca Aribado and Singapore’s Shi Yuan Mao both shared the bronze medal.

The triumph is viewed as a great start for the 19 year-old Rachel’s career.

“I was too confident in the beginning of the match and occasionally lost focus. I faced a tough opponent but I’m glad that I took great control of it,” said Rachel as quoted from Kosmo.

“This is happy news for me because it’s my first gold medal in the SEA Games. I need to keep improving if I want to leap further.”

Right after that, Sanjay Singh Chal scored the second gold medal for the national squash team in the men’s category. He successfully ousted Muhammad Addeen Idrakie Bakhtiar in straight sets 11-7, 11-3, 12-10.

The bronze medal was shared between both Singaporeans Bryan Koh and Samuel Kang.
