SEA Games: Singapore beats Malaysia to claim netball gold

The Singaporean netball squad secured their maiden gold medal at the OCBC Arena, after clinching a nerve-wrecking victory over Malaysia in the final.

Their causeway rivals went into the game as massive favourites, considering their reputation within the region, but Singapore were on the front-foot from the beginning, racing to an 11-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

But the Malaysian netballers upped their tempo in the final quarter, rallying back to forge a potential comeback. But Singapore eventually held on and scored three additional points to seize victory on the day.

“Even when we are five goals up we said ‘No. Take it as zero-zero. We were leading in the start of the game but we said it’s not good enough and they’re going to come back again. And credit to them, they did. It was a draw and they were up in the fourth quarter,” Singapore goalkeeper Premila Hirubalan said after the game.

Meanwhile, Thailand and Brunei both clinched third place, after losing the semi finals to Malaysia and Singapore.
