Rafael Nadal’s bid to grab his 10th French Open title suffered a hault as he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in straight sets during the quarter finals.
The Serb’s course to bag his first ever French Open title is going smoothly and climaxed when he manage to topple down reigning champion Nadal in style. This is the Spaniard’s second defeat in 11 years and 72 matches in the French Open.
The top seed won 7-5, 6-3 and 6-1 on the French clay court to advance to the semi finals. Despite the win, Djokovic was not at all carried away with it.
“Well, obviously an ideal scenario is today could have been finals and we could have been habing a different discussion. But right now I’m aware that this is a big win, which I will enjoy tonight,” said Djokovic after the match.
“But tomorrow is a new day and I have to move on. It’s only the quarter finals, and I want to fight for the title. That’s what I came here for. I have to kind of direct my thoughts to the semis.”
As of the defeat, sixth seed Nadal claims that he had seen it coming.
“It is not a big surprise, no, after a year when I didn’t win enough before here. Something that could happen,” said Nadal at a news conference.
“When you see the draw, quarter finals against Novak, obvious that it is early, a big match like that.”
Djokovic will next play against British number one, Andy Murray in the semis.
