Infiniti Red Bull Racing could potentially quit Formula One for good if they do not find a better engine or should Audi decide against partnering them.
The team is currently fourth on the constructors standings with 30 points, and they have significantly struggled for pace with their Renault engine this season.
The French manufacturer’s disappointing performances have left the Red Bull management with no choice but to seek for a more competitive engine, or ultimately leave Formula One. The only other alternative would be a partnership with Audi, and even Team advisor Helmut Marko claims should that not happen, they will certainly be out of the competition.
“If we don’t have a competitive engine in the near future, then either Audi is coming or we are out,” Marko told BBC Sport.
“There are so many rumours. Officially there were no requests or talks. The VW Group first has to sort out who will be the new chief of support, who will run the brand of VW and when they have sorted all these things maybe then they can think about what they are doing in motor sport,” he added.
Former VW chairman Ferdinand Piech opposed the idea of having any Volkswagen brand in F1, due to his animosity with Bernie Ecclestone. But Audi chairman Rupert Stadle seems far more open to the idea.
