Mick Schumacher seizes victory in F4 debut

Another Schumacher was caught spraying champagne on the podium and it wasn’t Michael or Ralf

Son of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, Mick Schumacher presented a sterling performance by clinching victory in his third race at the brand new German Formula Four series.

The German had bagged himself the ‘best rookie’ title for his wonderful heroics on the first day of racing at the Oschersleben track, between Hanover and Berlin.

Schumacher was ninth and the best of the rookies in race one and finished 12th in race two. However, he managed to bounce back and perform admirably in the final race to seize the win.

Driving his Van Amersfoort Racing, the 16-year old started 19th on the grid and managed to surpass pole-sitter Thomas Preining in the first lap. The race eventually brought out the safety cars but nevertheless,s Schumacher finished first with an advantage of half a second while teammate Joseph Mawson took second place followed by Preining in third.

“I’m ecstatic, of course. My first race weekend could not have gone better,” Schumacher said post-race.

“We had a good start, because my tires were still fresh, and it went well from then on, apart from at the end where things were close again. I was not too unhappy about the safety car.

“All in all, I’m really pleased with this start to the season and look forward to the next set of races.”

Schumacher started his motor sport career in 2008. To avoid attention from the reputation of his famous father, he started his career under the pseudonym of Mick Betsch, using the maiden name of his mother.

Schumacher is currently fifth in the standings with 27 points.
