Selangor maintained their position at the top of the Super League table after clinching a whopping 4-0 victory over rivals LionsXII earlier today.
Afiq Azmi was undoubtedly the star of the day, scoring a hat-rick in the first half as the Red Giants ran out comfortable victors at the Shah Alam Stadium. He initially broke the deadlock on the 6th minute mark, putting the home side 1-0 ahead with the fine finish.
Just five minutes later, Afiq scored the second goal of the game, before eventually scoring the third one on the 15th minute mark to complete the hat-rick; a complete turnaround from the striker’s goalscoring woes last year.
The 3-0 score line affected LionsXII’s confidence massive as they struggled to impose themselves onto the game. Khairul Amri worked hard upfront, but there was barely anyone feeding him with quality balls to create chances.
After the break, Selangor maintained their tempo and continued to press on the offence; a feature that has been consistent under the tutelage of Mehmet Durakovic. They have barely slowed down despite leading in games this season, and that effort produced handsome rewards as Guilherme de Paula silenced his critics with a goal on the 78th minute, making it 4-0.
Despite Fandi Ahmad’s men’s best attempts, Robert Cornthwaite and his fellow Selangor defenders were more than comfortable at the back, as they made sure the victory came with a satisfying clean sheet as well.
