20 year-old Anna Karolina Schmiedlova secured her first WTA title after earning a victory over Italy’s Camila Giorgi in the Katowice Open final.
Ranked 67th in the world, Schmiedlova showcased an outstanding performance as she managed to wrap up a 6-4, 6-4 straight sets victory over the Italian in just an hour and 28 minutes.
Third seed Giorgi visibly came into the final as favourites, having defeated world number 9 Agnieszka Radwanska in the semis, though she was unable to replicate that tempo against Schmiedlova.
She was rather nervy on the serves, managing to only secure 45% points on her first serve and 33% on her second during the opening set.
But Schmiedlova was extremely confident throughout the match, completing 6 out of her 12 break points to ultimately seize the win.
