World number one Novak Djokovic extended his winning streak against British number one Andy Murray after defeating him to claim his 5th Miami Open title.
Murray, who had been defeated by the Serbian in the semis of the BNP Paribas Open two weeks ago, was unable to end his losing run after being beaten 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-0.
The Brit applied pressure from the start to earn his first break point in the opening set but could not secure it when Djokovic broke the tie to 7-6. Murray then fought back to secure the second set and finished him off with an overhead smash.
In the third set though, Djokovic did not give in and wiped him out completely with a 6-0 victory to wrap up the final.
“I’m not quite there with Novak yet, but I feel like I’m getting a little closer,” Murray told the Seattle Times.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t make more of a fight of it in the third set. I was trying. My legs were tired and I couldn’t quite finish hard enough.”
This victory will now allow Djokovic to retain his world number one ranking, putting him on top of the list for a total of 141 weeks.
