National discus throwing prodigy, Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin has officially booked his spot in the SEA Games squad after breaking the national record at the ongoing 2015 Malaysian Athletics Open.
The 19 year-old managed to erase his previous record of 54.79 meters, which was set at the International Australian Athletics challenge last week; setting a new mark of 58.04 meters.
That allowed the Negeri Sembilan-born athlete to clinch gold medal, having been ahead of Sarawak’s Abdul Rahman Lee, who finished second with 40.88 meters. Malaysia Armed Forces’s (ATM) Hafiq Hashim clocked in 40.62 meters to secure the bronze.
The Negeri Sembilan-born athlete clinched the gold medal after being far ahead of Sarawak’s Abdul Rahman Lee with a distance of 40.88m. Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM)’s Mohd. Hafiq Hashim on the other hand recorded a distance of 40.62 meters to secure the bronze.
“I woke up this morning, and I just felt that I would be able to give my best. I wanted to break the record, but I didn’t expect to do it by such a distance,” Irfan was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
Meanwhile, national pole vaulter Iskandar Alwi managed to break the national record as well, after achieving his best jump of 5.16 meters; which beats the record of 5.15 meters that he set during the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) last year.
