Katarina Johnson-Thompson won her first medal in the Olympic heptathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympics, but she just missed defeating Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam for the gold.
With a time of 2:04.90 seconds, Johnson-Thompson—a two-time world champion—produced a career-best effort in the 800 meters.
The British competitor needed to finish almost nine seconds faster than Thiam in order to take first place on the podium after trailing by 121 points coming into the final event.
But with a record of 2:10.62 seconds, the Belgian took first place by 36 points and made history as the first female heptathlon champion.
Finishing with 6,880 points, Thiam’s countrywoman Noor Vidts took bronze in the final event, surpassing Annik Kaelin of Switzerland.
Jade O’Dowda of Team GB placed tenth overall, while Kate O’Connor of Ireland came in fourteenth.
