Paris 2024 Olympics: Duplantis gets world record as he defends his Olympic gold medal in pole vault

In the men’s pole vault, Sweden’s Armand Duplantis successfully defended his gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics and set a new world mark.

On Monday, the 24-year-old made his third and last try to clear the 6.25-meter mark, breaking his personal record of 6.24 meters from April by a mere millimetre.

Long before that, he had already won gold for the second time in a row after defeating American Sam Kendricks with a clearance of 6.00 meters.

Following his victory celebration, Duplantis went on to break the 6.03-meter Olympic record held by Thiago Braz of Brazil in 2016.

The world record has now been broken nine times by the two-time champion.

Additionally, after America’s Bob Richards won the pole vault championship in 1952 and 1956, he became the first athlete to do so.

“I don’t know how to put into words what I’m feeling,” Duplantis said. “I feel so grateful for how tonight played out. I didn’t let myself believe that I was Olympic champion until it was all done.
“I think it’s been such a fight to show up and to be at our best and do it when it matters.
“I feel so grateful for having this come together, a little bit of luck on our side, and being able to walk away on top. It’s just so special.”
