Great Britain’s three world mark breaks en route to winning gold in the women’s team sprint at the Paris 2024 Olympics provided an incredible opening to the track cycling events.
Throughout the competition, the world record was broken five times, all because to the outstanding performances of Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell, and Katy Merchant.
They shaved 0.15 seconds off the previous record in their first qualifying round at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yveslines velodrome on Monday.
Germany quickly seized it from them in an incredible ten minutes, and New Zealand then surpassed it to secure their spot in the championship race.
But in their heat versus Canada, Team GB regained the lead again, cutting it to 45.338 seconds.
In the final, they accomplished a remarkable feat, smashing the record a third time under Finucane’s lead. With a time of 45.186, they won the first-ever Olympic women’s team sprint medal for Great Britain, regardless of race.
Germany won bronze, and New Zealand finished 0.473 seconds behind them in second place.
