Even though England faltered to a disappointing 0-0 tie with Slovenia in Cologne, they managed to win Group C of the 2024 European Championship.
England did not have a shot until the thirtyth minute, in terms of attempts that would count, although Bukayo Saka’s goal against Phil Foden was disallowed for an offside. Harry Kane had the best chance to score but was unable to make a clean contact with Kieran Trippier’s cross.
The one change Gareth Southgate made to the team that found it difficult to play together in the draw with Denmark was to start Conor Gallagher in midfield instead of Trent Alexander-Arnold, as was expected, but the Chelsea player was unable to have any beneficial effect.
After being substituted for the second half by Kobbie Mainoo, the youthful player spurred an improved effort, but England’s pressure could not translate into chances, much less goals. There were a lot of careless touches and little movement.
Though the aim was never achieved, Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon did receive a taste of tournament play. Slovenia earned the point necessary to advance as one of the top three teams in Group C, but Denmark’s defeat of Serbia keeps England at the top of the group.
England could consider themselves lucky to have avoided teams like Germany, Spain, Portugal, and France in the knockout stages, which looks to be the more tough half of the draw.
