Poland lost to Austria 3-1, making them the first country eliminated from Euro 2024.
Gernot Trauner, Christoph Baumgartner, and Marko Arnautovic all scored goals to cap off an outstanding victory for Ralf Rangnick’s team in Berlin, leaving their opponents with two losses from their opening two Group D games.
And Poland finished the competition with one game remaining as the Netherlands and France drew goallessly later in the evening.
Austria got out to a fast start, and within ten minutes, their potent offensive strategy paid dividends when Philipp Mwene flicked a cross to the near post, where Trauner leaped to head in a stylish header.
As the half wore on, the energy decreased, allowing Poland to start mounting a comeback. Nicola Zalewski hurried a shot over the bar, and Philipp Lienhart then fearlessly blocked a shot from Piotr Zielinski and then fearlessly blocked a cross to the near post from Przemyslaw Frankowski.
They were back in the game after thirty minutes. An anxious moment occurred in the penalty area as a result of a cross from the left. Jan Bednarek’s attempt was stopped by Trauner, but Krzysztof Piatek took advantage of the situation to slot home the equaliser.
With thirty minutes remaining, talisman Robert Lewandowski gave the Polish fans in the stands a boost, but Austria quickly regained the lead when Alexander Prass’s sweeping pass was dummied by Arnautovic and completed by Baumgartner.
After 78 minutes, the game was won when Marcel Sabitzer was awkwardly taken down in the box by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. This allowed former Stoke and West Ham striker Arnautovic to score coolly, secure the victory, and begin Austria’s Euro 2024 campaign.
