Jose Mourinho has verbally agreed to take over as manager of the Turkish Super Lig team and is about to ink a two-year contract with Fenerbahce.
Although Mourinho has not yet arrived in Istanbul, the details of an arrangement that will allow him to stay until the summer of 2027 are being negotiated.
Fenerbahce finished second to city rivals Galatasaray despite recording 99 points and only losing once in the Super Lig this season, which led to the head coach Ismail Kartal’s dismissal.
Fenerbahce is expected to qualify for the Champions League through the second round next season, and Mourinho finds the move to be an interesting challenge.
Despite being among the most successful teams in Turkish football history, Istanbul hasn’t won the championship since 2014.
Following his two and a half seasons as manager of Roma, Mourinho was fired in January. Since then, he has been unemployed.
The 61-year-old, who had stints at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Roma, has won 21 major awards. Before being fired in 2021, he led Tottenham to the Carabao Cup final.
The only manager to have won the Conference League, Europa League, and Champions League is Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho will have Fred, the midfielder he signed with Manchester United in 2018, in his Fenerbahce team.
