The latest hire to lead Barcelona as head coach is Hansi Flick.
The former manager of Germany and Bayern Munich has committed to a two-year contract at the Nou Camp.
Flick takes over for Xavi, who was fired a month after Barcelona convinced him to continue as manager despite his original intention to quit at the end of the current campaign. The 44-year-old led the Catalans to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, where they were defeated by Paris Saint-Germain.
“FC Barcelona and Hansi Flick have reached an agreement for the German to become men’s first-team football coach until 30 June 2026,” the announcement said.
Following a 4-1 friendly loss to Japan and a 2022 World Cup group-stage exit, Flick was fired by Germany in September.
After helping Joachim Low lead his team to victory in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he went on to win two Bundesliga titles and the 2020 Champions League in his two seasons at Bayern.
Speaking in a video that Barca had uploaded on X, Flick stated: “I want to start by expressing my gratitude to everyone that was involved.” I’m excited to begin working for this incredible club in Barcelona after signing a deal that is both a huge honour and a dream of mine.
“The club is unbelievable. The hours I’m here in Barcelona, it’s amazing because everyone here in the club loves this club and tries to give their best so they have success.
“The philosophy they have is similar to mine – ball possession and really attacking football, these are the things I love.
The 59-year-old takes over for his predecessor, who was named manager of the team in November 2021 after he won 25 major championships while playing for it.
The squad moved up from ninth place in La Liga to second place under Xavi’s leadership.
In his first full season in command, Barca won the championship; however, they were unable to create a meaningful challenge this time, and Real Madrid defeated them.
