In a thrilling 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie scored his first goal since July 2020 to rescue Newcastle from an injury time deficit.
After the break, Dominic Solanke ignited the game by taking advantage of a terrible mistake made by custodian Martin Dubravka, but Newcastle tied the score controversially with a penalty kick.
Despite a near miss for offside, the referees decided that Adam Smith’s tug on Fabian Schar constituted a penalty after a four-minute VAR review. Playing into the middle without Callum Wilson or Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon scored the penalty.
Andoni Iraola, the manager of Bournemouth, was not at all happy with the decision, saying the VAR “disrespected small Bournemouth”.
