Man United and Spurs played out an exciting end-to-end game which saw goals from Hojlund, Rashford, Richarlison and Bentancur.
Rasmus Hojlund got the Red Devils off to a flying start as he opened the scoring with his second goal of the season, just 5 minutes after kick-off with a thunderous left footed strike which went straight past a helpless Guglielmo Vicario and into the roof of the net.
Spurs wouldn’t back down though as they kept threatening Onana’s goal and would reap their rewards in the 19th minute when Pedro Porro swung in a lovely corner for Richarlison to flick it onto the far post and in the back of the net.
United responded equally as they pressed Spurs high up and won the ball back, the ball was worked outside to Rashford who played a clever one-two with Rasmus Hojlund in the boxing he finished calmly through the legs of oncoming defender Micky Van De Ven. That goal allowed United to take the lead before half-time and was only Marcus Rashford’s 3rd goal of the season.
Spurs came out the blocks with the bang in the second half as just 46 seconds after the restart, Timo Werner cut inside into the United box and played a ball through to Rodrigo Bentancur, who shifted the ball past Jonny Evans and lashed it through the reach of Onana to equalise.
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou praised his team after the game saying: “I am delighted. We played really well. Obviously, not the greatest of starts, being a goal down, particularly here, and knowing the situation Manchester United are in, in terms of needing a result,“
“Their response was outstanding. Our football after that was really good and even before that, we were creating some good opportunities.“
“We then got hit on another transition but in the second half, we controlled the game. I couldn’t be happier.“
“We have had a really rough week off the field with quite a bit of illness and other things. This group of players has been outstanding.”
Erik Ten Hag on the other hand seemed to be frustrated after the game saying: “I think we scored two great goals and we concede two very soft goals,”
“The second goal from a goal kick, we should defend the diagonal, it is the equaliser and it is no good but I have seen some good spells, two goals but also some other chances. You are slightly disappointed when you get the result.”
He did seem to be pleased for Hojlund and Rashford though when he said: “I hope they keep going, there is progress, they are coming up with some routines and that is what you need, especially in the front line where a quick decision has to be made and in a split second you need the right decision so you need intuition.”
“I think that counts for every team when your front players are not scoring,” he added. “It goes through the whole team, makes everyone insecure starting with the front players when they are not scoring.”
United have a two-week break before a FA Cup fourth round tie against either Newport County or Eastleigh on January 27 before their Premier League trip to Wolves on January 31.
Spurs too play on the 27th in the FA Cup against Man City before welcoming Brentford to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on January 31.
