Palmer’s penalty secures crucial West London derby victory for Chelsea

Summer signing Cole Palmer slotted away his fifth penalty to help the Blues get their 3rd consecutive win this season.

Palmer converted his penalty after Issa Diop seemed to have brought down Raheem Sterling in the box just before half-time. Palmer, now known for his incredible composure has been dubbed the nickname, “Cold Palmer” for having the ice in his veins during high pressure situations.

The game was end-to-end but the lack of clinical finishing allowed Palmer’s spot-kick to separate the two sides.

The only other real talking point was Malo Gusto’s red card appeal. The young French fullback had left a mark on former Chelsea man Willian after lunging in on a 50/50 tackle but his studs had caught Willian’s ankle.

Fulham manager, Marco Silva was frustrated with the decision and said: “It’s a clear red card, it’s difficult for Anthony Taylor to see if it’s a red card. We have to be fair with him because the moment is really quick. In the Premier League, in 10 moments like that one, nine have been a red card.”

Pochettino had his views on the incident as well, but backed the officials after they faced a similar incident against Aston Villa.

“I remember the game against Aston Villa, it was a red card and I didn’t complain about that, but today it was a yellow card,” said the Chelsea manager.

“I have a very good relationship [with Marco Silva]. He is a great person and a great coach. And of course, if I’m put in his place, I would tell you it’s a red card. I understand.”

“But, sometimes, this type of situation is against you and the view of the referee is different. They thought it was a yellow card and it’s good for us.”

Both Chelsea and Fulham have Carabao Cup semi-final second legs against Middlesbrough and Liverpool respectively. After that Chelsea face Aston Villa in the FA-Cup on January 26 while Fulham play Newcastle in the FA Cup on January 27.
